- Base (posterior surface) is formed mainly by left atrium and partly by right atrium. It is separated from T5 to T8 vertebrae by pericardium
- The apex (the most inferior, anterior, and lateral part as the heart lies in situ) is located on the midclavicular line, in the fifth intercostal space. It is formed by the left ventricle.
- Anterior (stern costal) surface is formed mostly by right ventricle (major) and right auricle and partly by left ventricle and left auricle.
